Barnhall 8 Lansdowne 3 , Ballycorus Road. 15/11/2008

Only 3 points for a drop goal? Eoin Gantly

While packing my kit bag on Saturday morning I was pondering as to why the stock market crashed and would bank shares climb back to their previous values and little did I know I would find out later that day.

Anyway back to the match report...

Despite Kildare resembling a scene from the movie The Mist, it was another packed stadium for this battle of the 2 teams locked in mid table.
It could have been to do with the rumour that James “Butalasie” Fegan (secret love child of Frank “Butalasie” Kenny) was to make an appearance.

Due to the ref having to be flown in from London the match was delayed by 15 mins.
It was a dull 1st half with no score and only a couple of forced substitutions Geroid and Dan coming off.
The crowd would be disappointed if they were looking to see a high scoring game as it took almost 70 mins for the first score of the match.
After good forward play a ruck was set up just outside the Barnhall 22 in the middle of the pitch and a penalty was awarded to Lansdowne for Barnhall coming in from the side (for the 20th time).
Up stepped Oisin O'Cuinneagain to slot over between the posts for a 3-0 lead to Lansdowne.

Not long after that, Barnhall got on the score sheet against the run of play as Lansdowne had been camped on the Barnhall line for most of the 2nd half.

A chip to the Barnhall winger from the outhalf took a bad bounce for our Malaysian winger and it was 5-3. Barnhall missed the conversion.
A penalty was awarded to Barnhall for hands in the ruck in the Lansdowne 22 and was converted by Barnhall making it 8-3.
Despite great pressure from Lansdowne they could not get that vital score.

Then with only a few seconds to go the answer to my question I had that morning was answered.
Our centre Eoin “breakfast roll I'm a trader” Gantly decided to try a drop goal thinking it would tie the game even though we were 5 points behind???

I wont be buying any shares in the near future..

It was a great performance by Lansdowne in defence. All the work in training had sunk in.
We deserved more out of this game.
